Past Projects

CEMCA has completed several projects in the past for various national and international agencies, including UNESCO and FAO. Some of the projects completed in the recent past include:

  • EU project to "Promote Bamboo MSME Clusters for Sustainable Development"

CEMCA, in collaboration with Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC), New Delhi, the lead partner and with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and the Copenhagen Business School (CBS), is implementing a four year European Union Project (January 2018-Dec 2021), named “Promote Bamboo MSME Clusters for Sustainable Development” funded by the European Union (EU) under its SWITCH Asia Programme. CEMCA is directly undertaking activities amounting to Euros 2,80,437 (EU contribution Euros 1,45,226 and CEMCA contribution Euros 1,35,211)

The overall objective of the project is to promote bamboo as sustainable resource by creating/ upgrading sustainable enterprises and generate green jobs. The project is designed to help local communities and other stakeholders to collaborate for the promotion of green economy, sustainable growth, economic prosperity and poverty reduction along with mitigation of climate change.

The project is being implemented in the 9 states (Viz: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Madhya Pradesh) in India.

It is aimed to provide technical and vocational inputs to the bamboo farmers/ harvesters, artisans and enterprises for making value-added, standardised and eco-friendly treated bamboo material and gain access to better remunerative markets. It also aims to strength the Business Development Service Providers (BDSPs) for specialised services and suppliers for providing eco-friendly preservatives, glue, hand-tools & more efficient primary production machinery. It will result into improving the financial status of those involved and help the climate reducing multi-level of pollutions.

  • Collaboration with ORMAS

CEMCA supported Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) created under the Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Department, Govt. of Odisha, to upgrade skills of 70 trainers engaged in imparting vocational training under Deen Dayal Upadhyay – Grameen Kaushal Yojana (DDU-GKY). Through CEMCA supported endeavour, these trainers will be further trained, assessed and certified to make them master trainers to create a pool of more trainers. Upon successful completion of training of these trainers, ORMAS undertook to have 1000 trainers, trained through these 70 master trainers, at their own expense. Thus, the huge trainer workforce, so created, will be used by ORMAS for mass training and to create more vocational trainees. So far, more than 800 trainers have already been trained. CEMCA contribution will have a cascading effect on creating a huge talent pool and improving quality of vocational trainers and the trainees.

  • Community Radio Awareness

CEMCA has been conducting Community Radio Awareness Workshops, funded by and in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India, for many years.

These workshops aim to create awareness among the people and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) of the advantages of the Community radio station to help the local communities to achieve the socio-economic objectives. The representatives from Community Radio Stations and experts from states are invited in these workshops. The Community Radio Policy Guidelines and Funding support by the Government for the existing and new Community Radio Stations are highlighted in these workshops. CEMCA has been able to encourage and enable agencies to set up more than 120 community radio stations in India.

CEMCA developed a Video Film on “Step by Step procedures for setting up of Community Radio Stations” for the MIB to underscore the importance of the CRS in socio- economic development and help reaching the unreached communities.

During COVID-19, Audio Programmes on Skill based programmes developed by CEMCA were shared with 289 functional Community Radio Stations in India to broadcast these programmes. Encouraging feedback was received from the listeners of these programmes.

  • On Going ProjectsCCFC/Ford Foundation: With the support of the Ford Foundation, CEMCA has initiated a project entitled “Enabling Media Access for Community’s Self Expression”. The thrust of the project is to provide CR movement in India the required support and interventions through CEMCA’s Community Radio Facilitation Centre (CCFC), capacity building and advocacy. The CCFC assists communities to apply for CR license and help navigate the process of establishing a CR station. Apart from a unit at CEMCA, a branch has also been created at the premises of MIB. It has trained several grassroots members in the licensing process, and assisted over 175 applicants in various stages of licensing.
  • EDAA: CEMCA supports the audio sharing platform developed and maintained by One World South Asia – Ek Dunia, Anek Awaz. This is an online community of Community Radio Stations in India, and facilitates sharing of content generated by the stations in open licenses. With the support of CEMCA, the platform is continuously being improved to provide better services to the stakeholders.
  • Web Radio: CEMCA in partnership with Newzstreet – a private online media agency experimented with the use of web radio in 16 institutions through a Public-Private Partnership model. While CEMCA is currently not supporting this initiative directly, web radio is a special field of interest for CEMCA, as it has the potential to empower communities to reach global audience. Web radio is highly suitable in situations where bandwidth is not an issue with the target group. For educational institutions, web radio is highly suitable, as their content can reach more people anywhere in the world. In places where Community Radio licence is in scarcity, web radio can be an effective and easy means to start radio stations without the need for license.
