Workshop on Operational Sustainability of Community Radio Stations in Bangladesh

Chapai Nawabgunj, 9-11 June, 2013

As the Community Radio (CR) stations in Bangladesh enter the third year of operations, the inevitable question of operational sustainability begins to raise its head. Continuing their engagement with and support to the CR Sector in Commonwealth Asia region, Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) in partnership with Bangladesh NGO’s Network for Radio Communication (BNNRC), who are also invested in development of CR in Bangladesh, is organising a three day workshop for CR Station heads to discuss issues of  operational sustainability of CR stations.  Drawing from the Indian experiences and contextualising it to Bangladesh CR Policy, over three days participants will examine various facets of sustainability like financial, social, institutional and programmatic areas. The workshop is being hosted by Radio Mahananda at Chapai Nawabgunj from 9-11 June 2013. The output of the workshop is expected to be a draft strategic plan to strengthen each of the identified areas, by developing appropriate parameters and relevant indicators to make CRS sustainable. CEMCA in association with UNICEF, New Delhi has brought out a publication entitled “Abiding Voices” that provides examples and case studies of sustainability of CR stations.
