The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (COL-CEMCA) continue to lead efforts in promoting Open Educational Resources (OERs) and enhancing teachers’ role in AI-driven education through the Teacher in the Loop AI (TIL-AI) India project.
As part of Open Education Week 2025, COL and CEMCA organised the TIL-AI Open Math Challenge, an initiative designed to empower teachers to leverage their expertise in AI-based OER development. The challenge aimed to ensure that the resources created were not only curriculum-aligned, but also of high quality and pedagogically effective. The competition engaged 95 expert mathematics teachers participating in the TIL-AI project, culminating in the development of over 170 high-quality, curriculum-aligned OERs tailored for Grade 9 mathematics. These innovative resources include engaging videos, insightful documents, impactful presentations, and dynamic interactive learning tools, all designed to enhance the teaching and learning experience.
To recognise the contributions of participating teachers, COL-CEMCA organised the TIL-AI Open Math Challenge: Celebration & Showcase on 11 March 2025. The virtual event brought together more than 70 educators, allowing them to present their OER submissions and share insights to promote peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and build a stronger, more connected teaching community.
On this occasion, Dr B. Shadrach, Director, COL-CEMCA, officially launched the certificates to be distributed to the participants, recognising their immense contributions. He shared, “The exemplars developed during the challenge highlight the innovative approaches taken by the participants, which will benefit millions of educators across the country, making a significant impact in mathematics education.”
The OERs were assessed for their effectiveness and relevance by a panel of five subject matter experts on 17 March 2025 in Delhi. They included Dr Angel Rathnabai S and Dr Jaganmohana Rao Gurugubelli, Assistant Professors at the Central Institute of Educational Technology under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (CIET-NCERT); Dr Ruchi Mittal, Assistant Professor at Institute of Home Economics; Ms Meenu Gupta, Training Officer at State Council of Educational Research and Training; and Dr Ramesh Chandra Srivastava, Consultant, COL-CEMCA. They completed a thorough evaluation of these resources according to the e-content guidelines set by CIET-NCERT to ensure alignment with educational standards and quality benchmarks.
The 15 resources selected by the expert panel as exemplary will be formally recognised and rewarded during a bootcamp scheduled for 12 April 2025.
